We’ve evolved from a small wholesale granite brokerage company to a pioneer in the technology field for the monument industry. We have a reputation for producing monuments that display the high-quality craftsmanship that Barre, Vermont is so famous for. Team work is an intregal part of our company – so much so that our slogan is "Your Team in Barre". Every member of the Cochran’s Team understands the others’ jobs and is able to serve our customers effectively.

In 1987, (when DOS was the main operating system and computers were new!) we began marketing computerized CAD systems for cutting sandblast stencil. We offered "unlimited training" for those purchasing Cochran’s Quick-Cut Systems because we believed that well-trained customers would use the systems constantly. This became our best advertisement, as one satisfied customer told another and another and another.

We implemented our own CAD software when we opened our automated sandblast in 1989. Our streamlined sandblast has conveyors throughout for efficient movement of stones. We easily shape-carve over 100 monuments a week with four workers. Throughout the ‘90’s, we marketed Cochran’s Quick-Cut Systems; and used our system in-house to produce monuments for the retailers.

Another challenge presented itself: how to modernize etchings for the monument industry? We introduced ‘laser-etching’ to the Monument Industry in 1995! This was the first in the industry. Since developing the Cochran’s Laser-Etching System, we use it daily in our facility, and market it throughout the monument industry. Good quality black granite is the best for laser-etching. Lettering, designs or portraits are exquisite with the Cochran’s Laser-Etching System. We’ve produced a great number of laser-etched memorials since 1995. Several of the more notable ones:
      • 1997 – Sir Matt Busby (4 ft. portrait & lettering on a 6ft. plaque). This is set in England.
      • 1998 – Baltimore War Memorial – 22 pieces of black granite (7ft. tall) with laser-etched
letters. This is set in Baltimore, Maryland.
      • 1999 – George Washington Plaque (8ft. black granite plaque). George Washington’s life-size image (6ft.) and lettering on 2 sides – all laser-etched. This is set in front of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.

We’re looking forward to the new challenges of the next century!
